In science we are learning, shadow length with a partner. we are also learning independent, dependent, and control variables. In math we are all learning something different ,and reviewing from last year. Study your multiplication facts, and work on your pie, reflex math and quick tables. Have a great year, don’t forget if you go to Mrs.Myers in the morning. Have a great year in 5th grade. Written by: Kristin, Emily, Aubrey V |
You "moust-ache" us about what we did today in Language Arts and Math!!

What's going on? (for the week of February 18)
Math: We will be moving on to Chapter 9 this week. Since many of our skills learned during Chapter 8 will be carried over and continued into Chapter 9, we will not be having a chapter test until the completion of Chapter 9. For this week, we will be focusing on rounding fractions, along with adding and subtracting fractions.
Any students looking for extra practice on fractions, or any other Math skills that we have or will be covering this year are encouraged to check out the Front Row Math website: https://www.frontrowed.com or Front Row App for iPads

This program offers students differentiated Math practice based on their abilities. When starting a skill set on Front Row, students first complete a Pretest. Then, students are able to proceed through that skill set based on the results of their Pretest. If students have already shown mastery on a specific skill set, they 'test out' and are only required to complete areas in which they did not show mastery on their Pretest.

What's going on? (for the week of December 2)
Math: We will begin working on Chapter 6 this week (Multiplying and Dividing Decimals). The parent letter that has the vocabulary for the chapter has been placed in each student's mailbox. Based on the results of their Chapter 6 pretest (that was taken on Monday), some students may be skipping specific lessons within the chapter if they displayed on their pretest that they already have mastered that lesson's skill. Each student will be receiving a 'Must Do / May Do' designed personally for them and the lessons they will need to complete within Chapter 6 based on the results of their pretest. (Keep in mind, the pretest is not for a grade and covers material that will be covered within chapter 6, so students are not yet expected to have mastered the problems on it.) The Chapter 6 test will not be given until the week of December 16.
A review game over the Chapter 6 vocabulary can be found on our 'My Math' page.
http://mbakercgs.weebly.com/my-math.html

Science: We will be beginning our Life Science unit this week. Miss L. will be covering photosynthesis and will have various activities for the students to complete.
Students will also be introduced to our Ecosystems / Biomes project this week as well. For these two topics, students will be completing their own guided research while they try and solve a 'real-world' problem of where they would move to if our current biome became uninhabitable. This project will take several weeks to complete.
By Wednesday, students will have to complete their 'Binder Check'. This is a graded check of their Science Binder. Students grades will be determined by the following: (1) having their table of contents filled out, (2) having their pages in order in their binder, (3) having their pages accurately completed, (4) and the overall neatness of their binder (pages stored neatly in their binder). Please keep in mind, no pages should ever be taken out (or thrown out) of our binders (even at the completion of a unit).
There are Table of Contents copies posted around the room for students to check over in case they are confused as to what information should be included within their Science binder.
Reminder: Grade card envelopes need to be signed and returned.
Also, please sign up for a conference time (if you haven't already done so).

A vocabulary review (crossword) is also available for the students to complete. The unit vocabulary will also be posted on Quizlet for the students to study as well.
At the completion of this unit, there will be a 'Binder Check'. These Science Binders become valuable resources that we will reference as the year progresses.
Reminder: Grade cards will be sent home on Friday (11/8).
What's going on? (for the week of October 28)
Math: We will be finishing up with Chapter 3 this week. There will not be a chapter test (since division is continued in Chapter 4). Instead, we will have a Chapter 3 quiz in which students will be allowed to use their Math Journal to assist them.
We will be taking a break from our Math Journal beginning on Tuesday. For the remainder of the week, students will be completing an inquiry based project that covers the skills learned for Chapters 1 - 3. Project details will follow as the week progresses. For now though, students should bring in (if possible) advertisement flyers for stores.
Please continue to study your multiplication facts since you do need to know them in order to be able to divide.

Science: Students will begin to finish up with our unit over Scientific Method. Students will be finishing up with data tables, graphs, and conclusions this week. Upon completing these final steps, students will complete experiments that will tie the entire unit together.
Reviews for the Scientific Method unit will be handed out this week. Most students will complete the unit test next week.
Events:
Monday - Fall Fundraiser delivery
Wednesday - Ice Cream Sundae Party (Box Tops contest reward)
Thursday - Reader's Theater (presented by the Birchard Public Library)
Friday - end of 1st 9 weeks / 9 weeks reward (50 Flier Bucks)

October Box Tops Contest
This year our class entered our school's October box top contest. We submitted over 1,646 box tops raising $164.60 for our classroom. We won the contest! We won a trophy and an ice cream party that we plan to have around Halloween. We will continue to send in box tops in hopes of keeping the trophy.
